"Ricercar dopo il Credo", c.1635: Giralomo Frescobaldi (1583-1643)
Frescobaldi was a noted organist at St. Peter's in Rome and composed this
piece to supplement the Mass. An instrumental form, the ricercar had
developed from transcriptions of vocal motets in the early 16th century. By
the time this example was written, however, it had taken on a form and
character that clearly prefigured the fugue.
FRESCO.MID is a general, type 1 midi file with four tracks, one for each
instrumental voice. The original music was meant to be played on the organ,
but I've specified various horns for this arrangement. I'm not sure how fast
it should be played, but the tempo set here (100) is almost certainly faster
than Frescobaldi intended. The note values in the music I used for my
transcription had already been halved for convenience in reading and playing.
The original source is Frescobaldi's *Fiore musicali,* (Venice 1635). Modern
editions should be available at any library with a good music collection. The
piece is in the public domain.
